ATTENDANCE
We anticipate 100% attendance from all students and work towards this with parents, guardians and carers as well as with the students themselves.
WE AIM:
1. To make attendance and punctuality a priority for all those associated with the school.
2. To provide support, advice and guidance to students to this end.
3. To develop a systematic approach to gathering and analysing attendance related data.
4. To further develop positive and consistent communication between units/home and the school.
5. To promote effective partnerships with all other involved agencies.
6. To recognise the needs of the individual students when planning reintegration following significant periods of absence.
ABSENCE
If a student is absent from school and no phone call has been received then the school will phone the home to ascertain the reason for absence. If this continues for several days then after 4 or 5 days we would offer a visit to the home from the school Inclusion Officer. Every effort is made to encourage the student to attend school.
In extreme cases of absenteeism, a place is kept open for the student, but at least weekly contact is made with the parent or guardian, to discuss the appropriateness of this strategy. The EWO is contacted after two weeks and East Sussex Education Authority are also informed. Home visits will also be organised by the Inclusion Officer.
If a student attends school but then absconds, the parent/guardian/social worker is telephoned immediately. The police are contacted and made aware of a pupil absconding. The home is contacted again every morning and evening until the student has returned. A meeting is then set up at Headstart where a plan is made to avoid a similar event happening.
