GUIDELINES

The head teacher or senior management will act as assessment co-ordinator

Teachers’ assessments will be monitored by the head teacher or senior management in the role of assessment co-ordinator.

The head teacher or senior management is responsible for maintaining the resource library of teacher and task assessment materials including optional standard task activities and task activities from previous years. These may be used to support teachers in making or confirming their teacher assessments.

1. Statutory assessment

Because of the nature of the educational needs of Headstart pupils, it is very rare indeed for a pupil to be able to sit SATs.

2. Internal assessment

We therefore emphasise internal assessment.

Teacher assessments should:

· be made systematically and continuously throughout the placement of the pupil.
· give all pupils the opportunity to demonstrate what they know, understand or can do.
· use a variety of assessment techniques.
· be carried out as part of normal classroom activities; use both formal and informal assessment opportunities.

Teacher assessments should be carried out in all classes. Results of assessments in core subjects will be recorded on individual record sheets. Records of assessment would be passed on to the next teacher / school at the time of transfer.

Tests that may be used are as follows:

NFER Maths Tests
Daniels & Diack Reading Tests
Blackwells Spelling Tests

Connecting Steps

All test results are collated on an individual basis annually to facilitate tracking and target setting.
